VAT Explained
Value Added Tax (VAT) is a consumption tax charged on goods in 160+ countries (all of Europe/UK). Unlike US Sales Tax (charged once at the end), VAT is charged at every stage of production.
VAT vs Sales Tax
- Sales Tax (US): Visible. $100 price + $8 tax = $108 at register. State-based.
- VAT (Europe): Hidden. Price tag says €120. The item is actually €100 + €20 tax. You pay the sticker price.
VAT Refunds for Tourists
If you visit Europe/UK but live outside it, you can often claim a VAT Refund at the airport. This is essentially a 10-20% discount on luxury goods.
- Process: Get form at store (Global Blue). Stamp at customs. Get cash/card refund.
- The Catch: Admin fees usually eat 30% of the refund, but it's still worth it for big purchases (Chanel, Rolex).

- Warning: You must prove you are exporting the goods. Do not wear the watch before you cross the border (keep tags on).
Import Duty vs VAT
When you import goods (e.g. buy online from Japan), you pay two taxes:
- Duty: A tax on the *type* of good (Shoes 10%, Electronics 0%). Depends on the country of origin.
- VAT: A tax on the *total value* (Price + Shipping + Duty). Yes, you pay tax on the tax.
Reverse Charge Mechanism
For B2B services across borders in the EU, the buyer accounts for the VAT, not the seller. This is complex accounting logic designed to prevent tax fraud (Carousel Fraud).
Standard Rates (2025)
- UK: 20%
- Germany: 19%
- France: 20%
- Hungary: 27% (Highest in EU)
Tourist Refunds (Brexit Update)
Since Brexit, UK residents can now shop Tax-Free in the EU (and vice-versa). If you live in London and buy a Gucci bag in Paris, you can claim the 20% VAT back at the Eurostar station. However, the UK gov ended tax-free shopping for tourists VISITING the UK.
