The Real Cost of Driving
Fuel is the most visible cost of driving, but it varies wildly based on your vehicle and habits. A road trip from NY to LA (2,800 miles) can cost $400 in a Prius or $1,200 in a Truck.
Gas vs Electric (EV)
The math has changed. Electricity is cheaper than gas, but not free.
- Gas Car (25 MPG @ $3.50/gal): Cost is $0.14 per mile.
- EV (4 mi/kWh @ $0.15/kWh): Cost is $0.0375 per mile.
- Result: EVs are roughly 4x cheaper to fuel at home. However, public superchargers can cost $0.40/kWh, bridging the gap significantly.
Hypermiling Tips
Want to save 20% on gas without buying a new car?
- Drafting: Driving behind a semi-truck reduces wind resistance. (Dangerous, legal warning: keep safe distance).
- Coasting: Anticipate red lights. Coast to a stop instead of braking at the last second. Braking turns money (gas energy) into heat (brake pad wear).
- Tires: Keep them inflated. Underinflated tires add rolling resistance (-3% MPG).
EV Range Anxiety
The biggest fear for new EV owners is running out of juice. Realistically:
- City Driving: Range is amazing because regenerative braking recharges the battery at every stop light.
- Highway Driving: Range drops significantly (wind resistance). A "300 mile" EV might only get 200 miles at 75mph in winter.
Cost of Home Charging
The secret to EV savings is charging at home.
- Level 1 (Regular Outlet): Adds 4 miles of range per hour. Slow but free install.
- Level 2 (Dryer Outlet): Adds 30 miles of range per hour. Cost ~$1000 to install.
- Public DC Fast Charging: Adds 200 miles in 20 mins. Expensive (often costs as much as gas).
Tier 1 vs Tier 3 Gas
Does brand matter? Yes. "Top Tier" gas (Shell, Exxon, Costco) has 2-3x the detergent additives required by the EPA. This cleans your engine valves. Generic gas meets only the minimum. Over 100k miles, Top Tier gas can save your engine.
Octane Ratings
Putting Premium (93) in a Regular (87) car does NOT increase power or clean the engine. It is literally burning money. Only use Premium if your manual requires it ("Required" vs "Recommended").
FAQs
- Does AC waste gas?
- Yes, at low speeds. At highway speeds (>55mph), opening windows creates drag that wastes MORE gas than AC. Use AC on the highway.
- Is idling bad?
- Yes. An idling engine gets 0 MPG. Modern engines consume less gas restarting than idling for 10 seconds.
- EV vs Gas: The Break-Even Point?
- EVs cost more upfront but save on fuel and maintenance (no oil changes). The break-even point is usually 3-5 years of ownership.
